Joseph A. Campbell, a fruit and vegetable merchant, and Abraham Anderson, a manufacturer of canned goods, formed a partnership on November 8, 1869, to produce canned soups and other preserved foods in a small Camden facility. They called their venture the Joseph Campbell Preserve Company and focused on producing canned tomatoes, vegetables, minced meats, and jellies for regional markets. Anderson departed the partnership in 1876, and Campbell continued building the business under his own name.
